These cutting boards are the perfect size for most cutting applications, whether that be a quick dice of an onion for tonight's dinner, slice of a lemon wedge for your favorite drink, or some fresh herbs for a beautiful garnish.

Because most of the lumber I use in my shop has irregular widths, I am going to have scrap wood that is too small to use in a big project, but is too nice to throw away. I have saved that wood specifically for these cutting boards. Each board is uniquely designed so the colors compliment each other and I have no doubt that these boards would go well with any kitchen decor.

The boards feature any combination of walnut, maple, curly maple, cherry, yellowheart, purpleheart, and other beautiful exotic woods. They have rounded corners and edges and a hole in the corner for easy handling. The boards in the pictures represent the variety offered in these cutting boards, but I cannot guarantee which design you will receive.

Cutting Boards

Whether you use your cutting boards for cooking or they just sit out for display, cutting boards can say a lot about the user.

The Woods

All of the woods that I use in my cutting boards are locally sourced and sustainably sourced Appalachian hardwoods and exotic species from Central and South America.  These woods are very hard and dense and will withstand years of use.  They are also very beautiful.  I work to ensure each cutting board has a nice variety of wood species used and contrast within the woods themselves.  These woods have tight grains so that food doesn't get stuck inside the wood and bacteria doesn't grow wild.

The Process

Similar to my large furniture pieces, I build cutting boards one board at a time.  Each piece is hand selected for its beauty and unique appearance.  I try to keep wood coloring in a board matched as closely as possible in the planning phase.  Often times I will want to try a design that requires ripping boards into thinner strips on the table saw.

Once I have all of the boards arranged, I glue them together using waterproof and food safe wood glue, and leave them in clamps for several hours until the glue dries.  At this point, I run the cutting board through a thickness planer to get all of the boards to be the same thickness.  I then take the board back to the table saw and use a crosscut sled to trim the ends square.

At this point, I have a beautifully flat rectangle of wood.  I like to add some detail to my cutting boards such as rounded corners and edges and a finger hole.  To accomplish this, I use a template to mark off the corners and then I cut them at the band saw and clean them up with a disc sander.  Then I measure, mark, and drill the finger hole.  The last step in the detail work is to round over all of the edges with a 1/4" round over bit in my router.

Finally, I sand each cutting board through 220 grit for a super smooth finish and let it soak overnight in a mineral oil bath.  Before delivery, I will finish the cutting board with an application of Shine Cutting Board Oil which is my custom blend of oils and waxes for a beautiful and durable finish.
